Christian Olympians: You Can Be Christian and Competitive

Posted February 24th @ 11:34 am by Jerod Clark

I’m a sucker for the Olympics.  I’m not sure why, but for several weeks every two years my evenings consist of my wife and I sitting on the couch and watching an evening full of events.  Like every Olympic year, NBC rolls out a whole shlew of stories featuring athletes and their emotional struggles that [...]

So, why did we want Tiger to apologize?

Posted February 19th @ 10:30 am by Todd Hertz

Today, Tiger Woods broke his public silence regarding his extramarital affairs by saying he was “so sorry” for his irresponsible and selfish behavior. He admitted and apologized for disappointing his fans and causing them pain. “I have a lot to atone for, ” he said.
This apology was expected and widely called for. Many [...]

God wants me to win?

Posted November 9th @ 10:53 am by Steven Koster

A friend of mine is a chaplain for a NFL team. He and his wife spend time with players and their families. He prays with them, mentors them, encourages, challenges, and teaches them.
He’s not mentioned in Time Magazine’s recent write-up on NFL chaplains, but the roles sound similar.
The Time magazine piece seems to emphasize the [...]

Rooting for your favorite football team vs hoping for failure

Posted September 16th @ 11:23 am by Jerod Clark

I’ve been rooting for Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cuter to fail.  Well…I think the actual verbiage I’ve been using is “fall on his face.”  Either way, I’ve been hoping he doesn’t do well.
So as the NFL season kicked off last weekend and Cutler threw four interceptions, I was a happy man.
I guess I should give [...]

Purposefully Not Making Friends

Posted July 8th @ 4:56 pm by Chris Salzman

Found this via Iyov’s blog. It’s a collection of reality show participants saying the words, “I’m not here to make friends.”

Concatenated like that, this video makes reality TV seem heartless.
Personally, I’ve always found how we relate to each other in sport and gaming in the light of our faith fascinating. I have my [...]

The moral crisis of American sports

Posted March 28th @ 3:18 pm by Andy Rau

I’m not much of a sports person. When I was in fifth grade, the only game my junior league soccer team won all year was the one that I missed due to illness (a coincidence, I’m sure). But nevertheless, I found this New Republic essay about the moral crisis facing professional sports in America interesting. [...]

Witness on the golf course

Posted April 12th @ 5:40 pm by Andy Rau

A reader sent in a link to a post at the Redeeming Prufrock blog about a moving moment during the Masters golf tournament last weekend. Athletes commonly shout out possibly-sincere “thanks” to God for their athletic victories, but there was something different about the way golfer Zach Johnson spoke briefly about his faith:
...living this life [...]

Let God enjoy the game!

Posted February 3rd @ 7:14 am by James

Both Colts coach, Tony Dungy, and Bears coach, Lovie Smith, are out-spoken Christians.
Smith told the Dallas News, ““God is the center of my life. It controls all that I do. I hope I don’t have to spend my time telling my players I’m a Christian. I hope they see it in my [...]
