The #1 sign your pastor needs a vacation: this sermon

Posted February 12th @ 4:08 pm by Andy Print This Post

(Note: the video in this post contains crude and distasteful language. You’ve been warned. Although as the pastor in the video would no doubt explain, he’s just repeating what it says in the Bible… you don’t have a problem with the Bible now, do you?!?)

Hey pastors! Have you already preached sermons about all those famous Bible passages? Looking for a verse that all those other, wimpy pastors avoid like the plague? This pastor found one in 1 Kings 14:10:

You know, until I saw this video, I didn’t think it was possible to dwell too much on a Scripture passage.

(Via Kingdom People, which has some commentary.)

Yay, the KJV says I’m a man!

Not that it matters, but I have lived in Germany for about 7 years and I have never run into any of these signs this guy is talking about… And they do have urinals, so not sure how all men in Germany “pee sitting down” when there are urinals in every public restroom.

Okay, so now that I’ve got that off my chest, is this guy serious?

Okay, we get it… it was written in the Bible. And your point of laboring over the phrase without ever getting to a point makes the sermon distasteful and not instructive. The other translations didn’t change the meaning, just the offensive mental imagery. You can tell that this guy just likes to stir things up and doesn’t have a gift for teaching others. His first priority should be preaching the gospel message and leaving this kind of stuff for small group discussion.

As far as Germans not peeing standing up… just not so. The slang word “Piss” comes from the German word “Pissor”. Public restrooms in Germany (especially special events) have you pee against a wall into a trough (as in conduit, drain, or gutter). You then have to pay for a can of water to wash down the wall. Being in the Army, stationed in Germany I experienced a whole lot more than this novice preacher must have in three months.

What a great quote at the end there: “You better believe I’m gonna pee standing up.”

And then of course the great clincher that was said earlier about peeing sitting down: “That’s what’s wrong with our country.”

Wow…. just when I thought I had seen most every obsecure and sermon idea, here he comes. Wow.

Though I did find his comments relating masculinity/feminity to biblical translations disturbing as well. It all felt sad as tradition, once again, trumps text.

After spending a month in India, I have to say I’ve always appreciated the verse he quoted. The east and middle east have very similar cultures. So it’s easy to understand why that image is used. You really want to read offensive, read some of Malachi, or some of the other minor prophets. They really let loose.

Should people be offended or surprised by that type of language in the Bible? Absolutely not. Our western sterilized version of what the original verses say is almost a sin. God called men and women to be prophets, and they spoke the truth to the people of their time. That truth was not pretty.

The Bible is about real people, real times, and conditions. It’s full of murder, greed, envy, pick your deadly sin. It’s full of grace and redemption. Life is not pretty, if the Bible was pretty, especially the historical pieces, then it would be a fraud, which it is not.

I could be wrong but I would guess the thing about Germany is just someone, “yanking his chain”!

Also do we know for a fact this was a real sermon and not someone doing a parody or preachers? It would surprise me. I have heard some doozies but he was the only one I saw in th video. Didn’t see a congregation or anything. If that was my church I would have to leave it especially if I had young children. Especially daughters.

I don’t really understand the point he is trying to make… the emasculation of men? He seems to be getting pretty worked up over what seems to be a minor point.

But I also don’t understand why the description of someone who pisses against the wall is particularly offensive, Now, if that pastor had dropped trou and actually demonstrated for his congregation, that would have been offensive! But really, can’t we be grown ups and discuss a fact of life, as described in the Bible, without getting prudish about it? Seems to me the same mentality that is uncomfortable with talking about urinating would be the same mentality that is uncomfortable talking about, say, sexual passion. And God talks graphically about that too in the Song of Songs. In other words, like gmac said, God is willing to deal with all aspects of human life; are we?

I can’t say for sure it’s not a parody, but the Youtube page identifies the pastor as “Pastor Steven L Anderson, pastor of Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona.” The church’s website (http://www.faithfulwordbaptist.org/) has a lot more sermons in mp3 format, it looks like. If it’s a parody, it’s an unusually elaborate one. I’m inclined to believe it’s real.

(Also: anybody else think that the pastor looks and sounds exactly like Jack from “Lost”?)

When the video first started, I thought it was a spoof done with Matthew Fox (Jack from “Lost”). If that is a serious pastor, wow.

He seems to be really worked up about something, now if only he could communicate what is really going on in his mind.

I think we might be getting worked up by the word “pisseth” but what about the “against a wall” part? Is it really about “standing up” or “trying to hit a target?”

The guy does look like Jack from Lost but he also sounds like a fundamentalist Harold Hill (Music Man). We got trouble, right her in River City.

Also not to sound to crude but if a man is at a guest’s house (i.e. small group Bible Study) it’s better to sit down instead letting people hear the noise of the stream in the toilet.

This guy needs to write a book. He could become the next men’s ministry phenom! Can you imagine a conference with him and John Eldridge. They could call it “Wild at Fart”.

What does he do when he has to go both #1 and #2 at the same time? Does he pee standing up first and then go sit down on the stool to go #2?

I’m ashamed to admit that I’m one of those male pastors who occasionally pees sitting down.

However, I’m personally more offended by female pastors who pee standing up! I wish he would have addressed that abomination!

All I have to say is,”wow.” It takes a lot to surprise me but to hear a “pastor” speaking like this makes me very sad. It surprises me that KJV only folks believe that an outdated translation is better then the some modern translations. The NKJV, NASB, and NIV Bibles are better translated than the archaic KJV.

What is there to laugh about? Surely we have pissed standing down. hehe. Totally get what he is preaching about. It’s not about peeing standing, it’s not about not peeing sitting.

    Way to go sermon!

Oh come on! The President? What has that got to do with anything that pertains to life and godliness? This passage isn’t about masculinity, brother pastor, it’s about destruction of progeny. Serious stuff for a king.

You can criticize his theme, but the biggest issue with this guy is that he lost his Hammond player. Look at that thing in the left corner… it hasn’t been played in a year.

P.S.: The question is not “is this video authentic?” All you have to do is go to the church’s website (http://www.faithfulwordbaptist.org) and there he is. There is a photo of his congregation. The real question is: “why did he feel led to preach on this subject when he has only two men in his congregation?”
(If I was one of those two guys, I would have gone into the men’s room and pissed on the wall).
