A man who believed he bore the “mark of the beast” used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said.

Yet another reason to carefully explain the notion of “literal interpretation of the bible.”

That and the different literary styles contained within the Bible.

I have to ask… what if he was right?
What if he had the ultimate trust in God? Would YOU trust the Lord enough to cut off your hand if the Holy Spirit revealed to you that the mark was upon you?
Something to think about…

How horrible. That poor man, to be so ill as to believe such a delusion
.
This is a prime example of why I can’t stand it when preachers/teachers get overly involved in proclaiming “details” of the way the “last days” just HAVE to be. I hated eschatology in seminary and I hate the subject to this day. There are so many more important and beneficial things to learn from God’s Word.

Rebecca says, “Would YOU trust the Lord enough to cut off your hand if the Holy Spirit revealed to you that the mark was upon you?”
I think it’s safe to say that the Holy Spirit didn’t reveal this to him or anyone. It’s foolishness to trust single source impressions as being a “word from God”. This reflects not only a poor interpretation of Scripture but a simplistic understanding of the way God speaks to people today. Dallas Willard’s book Hearing God is an excellent discussion of this topic.

Didn’t really think of “what if?”. I’ve been trying to follow the Bible in a year program. As I read the story of Abraham and Isaac I wondered how something like that would go over today. Of course it wouldn’t. To have the conviction to cut off your own hand, while gross, does really make me think about the level of my commitment. I don’t think I’ll ever dismember myself, but I know I could do a better job than what I do now.

If he had taken the mark, it is an act of the will that is signifigant, which couldn’t be reversed once done,if he cut all his arms and legs off

In this scenario, the best thing for that person was to get help before he does anything to ‘the Temple of the Holy Spirit’. He should have consulted a minister or a prophet to reconfirm if that was actually the case and be sure which hand it may be on!

There is never a reason to harm yourself in any way. Upon believing, in the Gospel, The Good News, we know that our Lord took the beating for us, and we upon believing, are marked with a seal of the Holy Spirit. Satan would try to convince us of something else. You are clean through the word I have spoken unto you.

Hm. Seems like he was in the right to me. Try reading Mark 9:45-48. From some of these comments, I see a disturbing lack of faith. I think some of you believe this passage to be figurative, and not literal, which bothers me greatly.
