Here’s something a bit more lighthearted—I came across this classic religion joke by Emo Phillips and thought I’d share. The joke actually kicks in about midway through the clip, but it’s worth watching the lead-up:
As they say, it’s funny because it’s true. (Spotted over at Slacktivist.)

This joke is a golden oldie and it’s been told many times, that’s for sure. Does anyone know if this joke is actually Emo Phillip’s joke or if it came from another source? I’d love to know its origin.
At any rate, Phillip’s spastic sense of humor is spot on for this joke.

I wondered the same thing, Jason. I googled around a bit and got the impression that the joke originated with Phillips. But if anybody wants to chime in with the original source, go right ahead!

Bah who cares. The guy was a voice on Dr. Kats and Home Movies.

random comment: I didn’t know much about Emo Philips, but when I first heard the word emo used to describe music a year or two back I thought it was music by or inspired by this guy.
Back on topic, it reminds me that there are many cases in Northern Ireland of churches of similar, or even the same denomination beside each other. If they are the same denomination, one will be 1st and the other 2nd. But they didn’t build the second church because of growth, they built it because the congregation had split. Usually the stated reason was doctrinal, like the Westminster Confession of Faith, or which minister to select, but I’m guessing it was nearly always to do with more tribal political issues. Thankfully my own particular church merged back together long before I was born, but I know one friend who says his congregation split with one group going to a splinter* denomination, the Free Presbyterian Church (of Ulster, Rev Dr Ian RK Paisley’s denomination**), 50 years ago and it’s only now starting to recover.
*splinter is maybe unfair, branch or bough might be better, because I know many in it my age (late 20s) who are definitely attached to the tree of life.
**The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland is not related and predates the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster by about 100 years, though they are both Calvinist.

Is it just me or is his weird constant movement distracting and kind of awkward?
Meh. Otherwise it was pretty funny.
Thankfully I’m non denom…we push everyone

Ok we laughed – it is too true – we are all brothers – as long as you totally believe the same line I’ve swallowed and especially the hook in my mouth! Actually am non denominational and leaning toward barbarianism (read the book). The Lord has a sense of humor.
