Ongoing horror in Congo

Posted October 8th @ 8:51 am by Andy Print This Post

This isn’t an uplifting Monday-morning read, but I can’t get it out of my mind: the scale of evil taking place now in Congo is simply staggering. (Note: the article describes some very disturbing crimes.)

The world is filled with suffering and injustice, but this should shock even the most jaded observer. What is the church doing? What should it be doing?

PBS did a Point of View special on this topic a couple of weeks ago called “Lumo.”
This film deals with a hospital in the Congo. The hospital is Christian-run and the film is very inspiring (although still heartbreaking) as we watch Lumo recover emotionally, physically and spiritually from attacks on her by Congolese soldiers.

Pray. I would also encourage Christians to support mission outreaches such as the hospital that ministered to Lumo, and to go on short or long term mission trips. I don’t know how to say this exactly, but find out more about what rape really is, why it is so damaging. Because you probably know more women than you think who have been raped here in free world, too. Look, really look, at the end result of certain social, economic and religious systems. Be grateful.

ONE comment? there is but one comment here, and I am 3 days behind catching up on the news? C’mon world of Christians, get working. Get angry, get researching, get uncomfortable, but for Jesus’ sake, don’t say silent, don’t choose to ignore this and move on. Forget only supporting Christian-based outreaches/ hospitals – wherever people are being healed/ helped, that is where God is, and join in that work as readily as you would to Christian organizations.

How long must they suffer such violence?
How long will the church stay silent?

Thanks for your post. I am a new visitor to your site and am only reading about this for the first time. I thought I may have missed it in the local papers so i went to the archives to check. (http://archives.thestar.com.my/search/default.aspx?query=congo). As it turns out, there were no reports on the situation in Congo as described in the NYT.

This is indeed a terrible, horrible thing happening in Congo. I googled “congo rape” after that but I can’t bear to read the reports. Christians, please stand up for this precious land. Plead for His intervention. The Lord loves Congo.

Father, won’t you rend the heavens and come down. You see what’s happening. Forbid the evil one from destroying the lives of your precious ones. Many of them do not know you. Have mercy on this land. Have mercy on the people. Congo needs you.
