Ode to a Prophet

Today would of been Mike Yaconelli’s 65th birthday. He died in a car accident almost 4 years ago.

Mike was a friend and a mentor. While many folks have had an impact on my faith journey over the years, no one more so than Mike.

An 8-minute tribute video that Youth Specialties made after his death has been making the rounds on the Net the last coupla months. It’s made up of clips of Mike’s closing messages at the National Youth Workers Conventions. It’s powerful, challenging, and inspiring. Typical Yac.

Even though he’s addressing youth workers, his message applies to anyone in the church…in faith. Take the time to watch it and chew on the meat.

Keep on dancin’, Mike!

I have saved that on YouTube and want to watch it about once a month. What a Ride!

I was a youth worker for about 10 years. Jr and Sr. High (even college aged at one time). Mike Yaconelli and YS were where I got all the stuff I did (the Bible as well). The NYWC was the bomb and Yac was the best. I once told him I had to steal a subscription form for The Door from my youth pastors office. He was surprised that I had to steal it!

    I love this line…

“If you’re a youth worker here and you don’t have a rule that is made because of your youth ministry, you’re not a decent youth worker!”

I have been such a youth worker!

WOW – I’m closer to the end of my ride than the beginning – and here’s a word from this part of the journey – it gets BETTER. Bless you for posting this – about to send a link to our pastors. Things should wear out – our “stuff” and our bodies – wear them out doing something that is eternal not busy work.

Working with youth is both exhausting and fulfilling. Its a ride worth paying the prize of admission. He did. And now, he is reaping the rewards of it. He has left an imprint in young people, workers, his own family and us bloggers. That is what we were called for.

Oh, and I do appreciate the reminder to “have fun”. Sometimes it’s hard… but not forgotten.
