Just saw this music video from Brit hard rockers Sick Puppies. Could be fun for your youth group to do at the local mall:
Cool youth group activity

Wasn’t there a Dave Matthews Song similar to this a while back? Maybe…Maybe I’m thinking of something else.

Judging from the number of “FREE HUGS” T-shirts at Spirit West Coast (Del Mar) this year, it would seem that the idea definitely has some legs. Cool concept, very cool execution.

Nice video! What were they collecting signatures for?

I hate to knock the idea, but I have seen the expression of this a couple of times. One time it was generally a bunch of teens standing together giggling and everyone else wondering what they were up to. It is really hard for one teen to stand out there by themselves, but a group is a bit intimidating to most people. The other instance was a group that camped out a park bridge and pressured people into “getting” a hug to cross the bridge. Neither really worked.
I think it is a great statement on our culture that free hugs just scare most people.

I fear that people(especially youth) will come to think that giving free hugs is the same as being like Jesus. Really, that is a very big concern of mine.

Actually, that should be Aussie hard rockers Sick Puppies. They’re a trio from Sydney, Australia which is where the video is filmed.

This is a cool idea BUT there’s always the motivation concerns- I totally agree with Mr. Swink- hugging random strangers is not necessarily being Jesus. (Now maybe if you did it at a nursing home…)
My youth group went door to door and gave out free lightbulbs to people as a free gift) because “Jesus is the light of the world.” Very interesting to see varied responses—many folks uncomfortable with the f-word. (No, really, it’s free- no strings. No follow up visit. We promise!)

not a bad idea, but perhaps encouraging our childen and young people to offer hugs to strangers is not a good idea these days.
