I know. I know. That sounds like an oxymoron. Usually church sites are anything but great. Shame.
I posted some resources earlier for church websites, but I’ve also come across this cool tool called Great Church Websites. Talk about a labor of love. This guy’s going through a list of 5,000 churches he has and evaluating their websites. So far he has around 500 websites in the database.
Of course the site doesn’t make it in the list unless it’s great, according to a solid criteria he’s established. You can search for sites by region or by features (types of menus, backgrounds, images, etc.). So it could be an awesome resource for churches working to redesign their website.
He also has the most comprehensive list of website service companies specifically for churches.
Just a heads up…

Maybe I’ve missed something, but that labor of love appears to want me to pay money before it supplies actual links to churches!

“Labor of loves” don’t cost money? Is it a sin to charge for a good service? A workman is worthy of his work, and he’s done a lot of work on this. Plus, there’s a lot of good, free stuff on the site too…

I wasn’t commenting about his fee-for-service approach; I was really commenting about the description you used in this blog entry – which gave me the impression that it was a free database. When I tried to use it, I got a surprise!

He might have a little bit more credibility if his own site were “good enough to be chosen for inclusion”.
Looking at his resume, this man has absolutely no credibility in the area of graphic design, web usability, or web technologies.
If it was a group of people, it wouldn’t be so bad, but having a single person decide what is or is not great is sketchy to me, especially since he’s trying to sell this information. How easily could he be per$uaded to choo$e a $ite for inclu$ion?

Or, you can go to http://godbit.com/featured/ and take a look at the Christian sites (not ALL are churches, but most are) reviewed and critiqued by professional Christian web designers…. for free. You’ll also get a good education in web standards and how to build a modern, accessible web site.
