In what, I’m afraid may be a “sweeps” stunt, UPI is reporting that . . .
- Actor Kirk Cameron and author Ray Comfort will square off in New York with two atheists to debate the existence of God live on ABC.com.
The debate will be Wednesday after the network rescheduled it from Saturday to capture a larger audience, Comfort said in a news release.
Comfort, who says he can prove God exists scientifically, said ABC originally offered him four minutes to present his case. After conferring with Cameron and the atheists, the time was raised to 13 minutes.
“I’m ecstatic. I can prove the existence of God in that amount of time,” Comfort said.
ABC.com has nothing on it’s Web site, or on its search engine, concerning the event.
Christian News Wire, however, is reporting:
- ABC loved the idea, and will host a debate in New York City on May 5, 2007. Moderated by Martin Bashir, the debate will be streamed LIVE on their website and will also be filmed for “Nightline.”
Stay tuned . . .

So let me get this straight: one of the Christian participants is best-known (in MY generation, anyway) for having a friend named “Boner”... and HE’S, apparently, the more clueful of the two people representing the Christian side. (Scientifically PROVE God’s existence? Uh…) The outcome of this cannot be positive for Christendom. Of course, the REAL losers may be all of those people that spend their time watching…

I don’t know about that. It’s an opportunity for God to move in a mighty way. If Comfort and Cameron can present their views in a way that is received well then I think there is a good chance this will start a healthy discussion on the existence of God. Remember that ultimately God is in control of this situation, not Comfort, Cameron, ABC or anyone else. I think instead of doubting the ability of man, we should praying for and trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit to speak through these men who are taking a major step of faith in doing this.

You guys misunderstand Kirk and Cameron. They are annointed by God to do his bidding. Check out their evangelical website http://www.wayofthemaster.com
I know that they both have the annointing and the knowledge to tackle this endeavor.

Amen, David. Actually, details of the event can be found at http://www.abcnews.com/nightline.
By the way, Ray Comfort has been an evangelist for 30 years, is an award-winning author of 60+ books (including The Evidence Bible), and has debated atheists before. He and Kirk Cameron have a ministry called The Way of the Master, in which they teach Christians how to share their faith biblically. I highly recommend you check it out(wayofthemaster.com).

I would agree wih David…I mean after all…if God can speak thru a Donkey…he can sure use a former Sitcom star and Preacher with no theological training.
It will be interesting to see how ABS handles it. Will they try to spin it?
Hmmm.

“Prove scientifically” . . . . Surely this is a spoof. . .

I’ve been following these guys on “Way of the Master” for about 3+ years now and this ministry is absolutely AWESOME!!! Please listen to Kirk Cameron’s testimony entitled, “Soundly Saved” on that website. You will enjoy it! It’s very powerful! Please pray that many unsaved people will be watching this episode of Nightline and be Saved! This is a mighty move of God!

It sounds like Comfort’s performance at the debate was less than the “scientific proof” he was offering. Does anyone have their thoughts on the event?
