You may remember our original posting last November about this controversial series of short videos. The makers have just released two more versions:
Christian vs. Christ-follower, part deux

That looks like Nancy Beach from Willow Creek…in the counselor one.

I have two main problems with the first one:
1. The implication of these commercials is that if you are a wiz at exegesis then that means you you have no idea how to reach lost people. And if you don’t believe in seeker sensitive ministry then you are equated with a tightly wound dork in a bad suit? The false dichotomies abound! In my opinion these commercials are overly simplistic and present very unhelpful characterizations.
2. Christians need to spend way less time copying the culture and spend more time thinking about how we can be uniquely creative for the glory of God. No one is impressed by our feeble attempts to be “relevant” by performing a copy job that is half as good as the original.

Ha, ha! I didn’t know where the second one was going until right at the end. That is too funny. I for one think these things are hilarious. I just wish more Christians possessed a sense of humor and could laugh at themselves instead of getting all worked up over these issues. And, yes, I do understand the issues involved. But we cannot afford to be either cultural gluttons like some of the emergents, or cultural anorexics like some on the more “serious” end of the scale.
I think we can take our responsibility seriously without being so “serious” all the time.

Is it okay to say about oneself that you have a good sense of humor? If so, then I’ve always thought of myself as having a good sense of humor – even being able to make fun of myself and “Christian” culture stuff. However, I see no humor in these skits.
The Emergents want to come across as tolerant of various world cultures and I doubt it would ever go to the extent it does here to make fun of those non-Christian (or non-Christ follower) cultures.
