Become your own cult leader

Al at the Adversaria blog has come across an informative video explaining exactly what goes into creating a cult. (Note: the video has a few disturbing images, so watch at your own discretion.) Al observes that certain common practices within the Christian church can bear a definite resemblance to cult-recruitment tactics when they’re taken too far.

His suggestions? Make sure your church community doesn’t isolate itself too much theologically from the broader Christian world; be careful not to send the wrong message when talking about religious conversion; don’t overwhelm the congregation with too many church activities; and make sure you understand the difference between educating a new convert and simply indoctrinating them. Lots of food for thought—read the whole post.
