The First Stone

Jesus said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” (John 8:7)

Man, if we could just remember that infamous sentiment from Jesus, the world would be a different place, right?

I just saw this little gift-y thing called The First Stone – a paperweight that is a constant reminder of this sentiment.

Of course you could give it to someone who really drives you crazy because they’re so judgmental. (Yeah, that’ll go over well.) Or buy it for your whole pastoral staff at church! (ha) Or…maybe just get one for you! (Yeah, that’s what I’ll do…)

Just had to share it…

I’m afraid this should be filed in the category of Christian detritus alongside inspirational aprons and sanctified air fresheners.

My immediate (and over pious!) thought was why not follow the simple prescription of meditating on God’s word, hide it in your heart and you’ll have something more transportable than a tooled stone!

Mikey – you gave us an “out loud” laugh today! The wonderful thing about the First Stone – is that some enterprising souls are going to make $9.95 PLUS shipping and handling on this black painted rock with lettering. What a world in which we live! Don’t the scriptures exhort us to keep the Word in our heart? Not sure that a purchased rock on someone’s desk will remind them more than the Holy Spirit’s guidance but for those with money to blow – go for it!

I think it’s kinda cool—the message, at least, is more practical than that of most “Jesus junk.” The Bible does tell us to write the Word on our hearts, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need the occasional external reminder to keep us on the right track…

I think it’s cool too. I know I lose focus often during the day, and a little reminder never hurts. I don’t think I’ll be spending $10 on a rock anytime soon, but it’s still kind of neat. I think maybe one of the many rocks my kids pick up during our outdoor excursions might be just the thing. Thanks for the idea.
