Now that the Da Vinci Code movie is here and the hype is slowly starting to wind down, what are we to make of the book, the controversy, and the excitement it’s caused in both the church and mainstream culture? What was Dan Brown trying to do with his story—was this an attack on the church, “just” an entertaining story, or something else entirely?
I had the chance last week to talk through these questions with Mike Gunn—pastor, Hollywood Jesus writer, and author of the new book The Da Vinci Code Adventure: On the Trail of Fact, Legend, Faith, & Film. Listen as Mike chats about Dan Brown, conspiracy theories, the church’s response to cultural events like DVC, and more!

Mike’s book is one of the more unique and interesting voices discussing the DVC phenomenon—with so many Christian books and websites focused on debunking the book, he takes a notably different approach to the issues. Even (or especially) if you’re weary of all the DVC-related talk these days, tune in to hear a different take on the subject.

He has an interesting perspective which I find to be a refreshing alternative to the hype-driven stuff.
It seems wise to me to, as he suggests, to allow a book like this to inspire us to (re)study the context(s) of the gospel.
And the fact that his call to humility seems so new in this discussion should be an indicator of the maturity of the way the Christian community has handled it thus far.
I would add to his thoughts that we need not fear everything that appears to be a threat to the gospels. If we really believed that the Truth is therein, we would not feel so insecure about non-truths outside of it.

I read the DVC sometime ago and was facinated with how well the locations were described. I lived in Europe for several years and remembered some of the areas he described. The book is fiction and well written, but it’s not the truth. For the truth of Jesus is so much more elaborate. Could you imagine Jesus today on his daily walks healing people on his way.

I’ve read the Da Vinci Code and I think that if you believe in God and love, it’s just a story to read. Anyway, whether what Dan Brown says is true or not I think it doesn’t make much difference because the message of love is intact.
I think that many people would love Jesus whether He had had children or not. He would have been the same message of love to us, so I don’t know why there is so much controversy over this book.
God and his message are more important and universal, so I think they can’t be affected by some details whether they’re true or not. I think these details shouldn’t affect anyone’s true faith.

The DVC is just a fiction, why to worry about it when we know the liberating truth. As we stand on the Rock, nothing can move us, no storm, no wind, for we know whom we have believed. Praise the Lord and Hallellujah.
Well, devil is defeated as he couldn’t do anything by all his foolish methods.
Why not we all join and pray for Dan Brown to come to the knowledge of Christ, and be His messenger, like Apostle Paul, what a great testimony it would be.
