Name your own Reformed church!

The Evangelical Church Blues blog is poking fun of goofy church names, and has even gone so far as to create a suburban church name generator you can use to quickly come up with a name for the megachurch you’re founding in the ‘burbs.

I had a bit too much fun with his name generator, and started to wonder what a name generator for churches in my own denomination would look like. Like most good Calvinists, I’m a member of the West Michigan-based Christian Reformed denomination. The lists below can be used to name your very own Reformed church in the Midwest—just pick one term at random from List 1, then List 2, and so forth until you have a full name for your church. (All in good fun, of course.) Click below for the lists…

Step 1: Choose an adjective

  • First
  • Second
  • Third
  • Only
  • Calvin
  • Last

    Step 2: Choose another adjective

  • Grace
  • Dutch
  • Reformed
  • Covenant
  • Covenant Reformed
  • Grace Reformed Dutch Covenant Christian

Step 3: Choose a church type

  • Church
  • Family
  • Community
  • Fortress
  • Kierke
  • Sermonhaus

Step 4: Choose a closing prepositional phrase

  • of [your town]
  • of Grand Rapids, Michigan
  • of the Reformation
  • of Calvin
  • of the Elect
  • of Total Depravity

Now that you’ve picked an item from each list, just combine them. For instance, Third + Reformed + Community + of the Elect. See how easy that was? (Anyone else want to poke fun of their own denomination? Surely there’s a Baptist or Methodist version waiting to be created…)
