Christian attitudes towards film and Hollywood have evolved quite a bit over the last decade. Ever since The Passion of the Christ, we’ve been seeing a new focus on people of faith working within the film industry, people whose response to the spiritual void of Hollywood is not just boycotting immoral films, but creating works of their own that reflect their faith.
Church of the Masses blogger Barbara Nicolosi has a new book out about this—Behind the Screen, a collection of essays by Christians in Hollywood. There’s a very thorough review of the book by R.J. Carter in The Trades, which provides a good overview. Quoted from the review:
Are you getting the impression that [Nicolosi’s book] might not be the “Rah rah, unite against the evil empire!” cheer that you may have expected? It’s more. It actually lays much of the fault for the great divide between Hollywood and the church at the feet of Christians, either for lacking the understanding of how the media works or for missing opportunities to draw Hollywood closer when they do something right.
It looks like the book includes some good discussion of topics like Christian boycotts, the Passion controversy, and so forth. Might be worth adding to your reading list.
