Up, up, and away! Zimmerman's
We’ve got something special for you today: ThinkChristian’s first podcast!

I recently had the chance to sit down and talk about God, superheroes, and comic books with Dave Zimmerman, author of Comic Book Character. In CBC, Dave takes a close look at superheroes and what they have to tell us about our values and the challenge of living virtuously. Here’s the audio of our conversation:

Comic Book Character: Interview with Dave Zimmerman (52 meg MP3 file; click to download)

Many thanks to Dave for letting me take time away from his busy Saturday to pester him with questions about superheroes.

Here are two relevant links you might want to check out in conjunction with the interview:

  • Dave’s book Comic Book Character, available from IVPress. Plenty of info there, including a downloadable group study guide to go along with the book; and
  • Dave’s blog Strangely Dim, where he talks about superheroes and other topics.

WOW! What an interview. Interesting: “In the last days men shall be turned to fables.” (inanimate objects act human. “Trees bow down and make the bush to rule over them.” “A donkey admonishes his master’what’s the matter with you, can’t you see the Angel in the road?’” Doesn’t this sound like what’s happening today? Not just in comic books, but everywhere in our culture. SELAH! Stop and think. What’s happened to our kids? Now what? “How Shall We live?”

Why do we like super heroes? Why do we identify with them? Has God put a desire in each of our hearts to fight evil and rescue people from peril? I believe the answer is yes and we lack confidence.

There must be a reason that advertisers play on our need for confidence. Whether it’s enhancements, argumentation, a brighter smile or a cool confidence builder car. But the problem with those things is that you can only have confidence in something that’s unchanging. Popeye was dependant upon spinach. No guarantee he’d get it. Superman needed a phone booth I think. Try finding one now. You could loose your teeth; wreak your car, etc.

There is only one who is unchanging, the same yesterday, today, and forever. When we find our confidence in Him alone we will be more than conquerors.

Jeremiah 17:7 “But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
    whose confidence is in him.

Hey everybody: Sorry for all the uhs and ums and other filler words on the podcast. If I were more succinct, the podcast would be fifteen minutes. Thanks to Andy for taking some time with me; I had a lot of fun.
